Luxe ride to lust after. There are many things to love about the new BMW 7 series, it is clean cut, intuitive and muscular. The previous BMW 7 series may have had a controversial design but it was also the most successful 7 series ever.Hence BMW had to tread carefully when it came to its replacement. Making improvements in the styling department was perhaps a far easier task than upping the car’s overall performance. The new car looks quite debonair, with styling lines that flow congrously from every angle. It hardly occupies more space on the outside but BMW designers have carved out more room inside, thanks to a longer wheelbase and slightly taller roof line. It is evident that much has been done to produce a more user friendly environment. The much touted and perhaps, despised iDrive controller has not been spared and now has iPod and iPhone connectivity. Some controls, such as the seat adjustments, have reverted to more intuitive knobs and levers placed where most people expect them: on the seats.
It has taken BMW seven years to act on customer feedback but better late than never as they say. Even the steering wheel came under scrutiny. It is now devoid of the infrequently used gear change buttons. And its old fashioned column mounted shift lever has given way to a futuristic transmission joystick introduced in the 4 and X series cars. The uncluttered steering wheel now feature a sportier three spoke design. Weighing less, the 750Li is truly an impressive sprinter. It blasts off the line and scorches to 100kmh in 5.3seconds. The twin turbo engine’s delivery has very little lag, thanks to an extremely well matched automatic gearbox. Together, they deliver excellent refinement and staggering overtaking performance. More remarkably, the car achieves hesitation free kick down responses while using less fuel than the previous 750Li, which had a 4.8 litre power plant. Predictably, the 750LI is significantly sportier in its handling and performance than its predecessor, which makes it a shame that many end up being chauffeur driven.

This large limousine is as agile as its smaller stablemate, the 5 series. Yet, it has the ability to pamper rear passengers in a manner just shy of a Rolls-Royce. On weekends, owners should now be more than happy to take the reins and join those who revel in the simple pleasure of driving a well sorted car.
